Therapy Supplies

This page is dedicated to helping you find therapeutic tools and supplies that you may find beneficial.  We receive many questions about which tools should be in every dancer's bag.  Below is a list of several  items that we frequently mention and/ or recommend to our patients.

Let us know if you have any questions!

The Stick

The stick is an effective tool to segmentally compress and stretch muscles.  The beads will conform to muscle tissue to remove trigger points, massage soft tissues, and disperse lactic acid buildup after dance class. The larger version covers more surface area; the smaller version is great to keep in your dance bag!

Foam Roller (Firm vs Soft)

Foam rollers are another great way to perform self-massage.  The difference is that you apply your own body weight in order to provide therapeutic pressure to specific soft tissues.  The firm rollers will provide deeper pressure and are great for maintaining muscle mobility. The soft rollers will provide lighter pressure, so they are great for acute injuries or if you happen to bruise easily. Either will do the trick for sore and tight muscles, so this is sometimes a matter of personal preference.

Cryo Cup

The Cryo Cup is a tool used to perform ice massage for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including strains, sprains, muscle spasms, pain and inflammation.  They are re-usable and keep your hand from getting cold while you massage.  They can be used on many body areas, but they are particularly helpful when working on uneven surfaces such as ankles, elbows, knees, etc.

Kinesio Tape

Kinesio Tape is a form of therapeutic taping that is designed to facilitate the body's natural healing processes.  It provides support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting range of motion.  Kinesio Tape can also be used to extend the benefits of manual therapy provided by your physical therapist.

**This taping technique requires training and skill to apply correctly, so if you are a patient, I will let you know if this product is appropriate for you.

***If Kinesio Tape is used during your visit, it will be included in the visit rate!

Foot Roller

This durable, natural wood foot roller is a great tool to keep in your dance bag for those long rehearsal days.  It provides relief for tired, achy feet by massaging and releasing pressure points, as well as increasing circulation to the feet. The rubber grips on the sides help to keep the roller in place for direct pressure to the sole of the foot.

ProStretch vs Slant Board

Both the ProStretch and the Slant Boards can be used to increase range of motion and flexibility in the lower leg.  Because of their design, these tools keep the foot in proper alignment during stretching to isolate the proper muscle groups, tendons and ligaments such as the calf muscles (gastroc-soleus complex), Achilles tendon, and plantar fascia.  Because everyone's anatomy is unique, some dancers will feel a "better stretch" using one tool or the other.  I have both tools in my clinic to try out!
